A day in the life of…..

Posted by LP

Alarm at 6am - up, dressed and packed up by 6.45

Out before the sun was up - wonderful stars and planets  to see in the sky

Photo - VQT checking the Camino App - we missed a turning in the dark

Walked for an hour or more until we reached the ruins of an convent for pilgrims, San Anton - there is a hostel there now

Photo - interior of ruined convent

Soon after we walked into the town of Castrojeriz

Photo - approaching the town, the church is dominating the view

We went inside the church, paid 1euro each for the visit and a stamp in our pilgrim’s “passport”

We were ready for breakfast - we went into the first cafe we saw

Photo - the menu board at cafe - we had scrambled eggs with cheese and bread, tea and fresh squeezed orange juice for 19 euros total

Photo - you can tell it is a classy establishment by the sign that says “It is forbidden to take off your shoes inside the bar”
Photo - friendly cat by LP’s feet - we met a couple of sweet cats on the way out of town
Photo - sign says curves and a 12% incline - the path was long and steep (see VQT’s blog post) - there is some debate on the height of Alto de Mostelares, we like the tidy number of 1,000 feet above sea level

Photo - the Meseta and Camino as far as the eye can see
Photo - we stopped at a shady rest area - we ate some dried fruit and nuts

We walked and we walked and we walked

Photo - we saw this dog so intent on his ball as we walked and walked
Photo - photo of river - we crossed the Rio Pisuerga - it looks nice and cool, but the temperature was rising - we walked and we walked

Photo - mural of the name of the town = Itero de la Vega - it was lunchtime by now and we stopped at the cafe for tea and ice cream = 7 euros total
Photo - green door - took this important photo on the way out of town
Photo - passed this marker = 424 km to Santiago - we’ve been walking for 14 days and we are nearing our half way point

We walked and we walked and we walked (in the heat with very little shade) - 17+ miles later we arrived at Boadillo del Camino - then I stopped taking photos because I was thrilled to be at our destination - we drank a large beer (it was marvelous), we checked into our hotel (very pleasant, simple and modern) - then a big decision = eat lunch (served between 2 and 4pm OR wait for dinner at 7pm?) - we ate lunch in our dirty and smelly walking clothes = asparagus omlette and salad, water melon, wine and water for 20 euros total = fantastic! - we had a snooze and a shower……and that is about all we can manage for today!

It is 8pm local time - we will soon be asleep, good night 💚
